Getting Dressed When Life’s a Hot Mess 👗

The line between work and home has blurred, and so has the art of dressing for the day. With babies, pets, Zoom calls, and coffee spills, mornings can feel like controlled chaos. I’ve been experimenting with ways to stay polished without sacrificing comfort, and here are my top three go-to tips for surviving—and even enjoying—getting dressed.

1. Prioritize Comfortable Tops
I’ve learned that the right blouse or top is a game-changer. Soft, breathable fabrics make a world of difference—cotton blends, silk-like satin, or light stretch materials feel like a hug, not a straitjacket. The goal is to look put-together without feeling restricted.

For me, mornings often start with a baby fussing or a coffee spill, so I want something that can handle life’s little surprises. A well-chosen blouse not only makes Zoom meetings look effortless but also moves with me as I chase the little one or grab lunch on the fly. I even found that simple, classic colors—navy, cream, soft gray—help me mix and match quickly, which is a lifesaver on hectic mornings.

2. Layer Smartly
Layers are everything right now. A light blazer, cardigan, or even a casual trench can transform a simple tee into a professional look. I love layering because it gives me options: a video call in the morning, errands mid-day, or a quick stroll outside without having to change my entire outfit.

Layering also helps with the unpredictability of home life. When a baby decides it’s time for a snack mid-call, or the air conditioning hits harder than expected, a lightweight layer keeps me comfortable and confident. And there’s something about throwing on a blazer that instantly makes me feel more “together,” even if my hair is a little messy from the morning chaos.

3. Stick to Simple, Classic Silhouettes
Loose but tailored tops, wrap blouses, and straight-cut shirts are my heroes. They look polished without requiring constant adjustment, which is key when you’re juggling work and distractions like little feet running around.

Simple silhouettes are versatile, too. I can wear the same blouse with trousers for a client call, swap in jeans for errands, or pair with a skirt for a quick outdoor meeting. The flexibility saves mental energy and allows me to feel professional even on days when life feels messy.

Focusing on these three areas has made my mornings feel more intentional, even when they’re chaotic. Comfortable tops, smart layers, and simple silhouettes don’t just make me look good—they make me feel ready for whatever the day throws at me, from baby interruptions to unexpected video calls.

After trying a bunch of brands, styles, and trends, I can honestly say that this approach has made getting dressed something I don’t dread. My review? Not bad at all—it’s real life, manageable, and still stylish.
